General Provides Overview
Of Italian Air Force 4th Brigade
In May, the chapter organized a visit to
Borgo Piave (Latina), headquarters of the
Italian Air Force 4th Brigade–
Telecommunications, Air Defense Systems and Air
Navigation Services. Brig. Gen. Giuseppe
Sgamba, ITAF, gave participants a complete
overview of the brigade, focusing on its primary goals. He expounded on its 2014-15
activities and discussed its long-term objectives. The brigade’s main technical activities
are: integrated logistic support for operational systems; technical and maintenance
interventions; technical management (
procedures and checks); instrument calibration;
and telecommand, telecontrol, telediagnosis
(T3) function. Finally, Gen. Sgamba gave
participants a tour of the main structures
and assets of the brigade.
Chapter Funds Postgraduate
Scholarships, Closing Ceremony
For Advanced Course
In April, the chapter sponsored the closing ceremony for the University of Rome
Tor Vergata engineering faculty’s second-level postgraduate master and specialization course in advanced telecommunications systems and satellite navigation.
The ceremony was held at the faculty’s
headquarters, where four officers and an
MBDA engineer received their postgraduate certificates. The chapter funded three
scholarships for armed forces officers with
master’s degrees in engineering, mathematics or physics. Chapter President Lt.
Gen. Antonio Tangorra, ITAF, attended
the ceremony and congratulated the students. They include: Maj. Giovanni del
Genio, Corps of Italian Air Force Engineers; Lt. Giovanni Pecoraro, Corps of Italian Air Force Engineers; Capt. Vittorio
Sanzari, Corps of Italian Army Engineers;
Lt. Libero Ruggiero, Corps of Italian Navy
Engineers; and Lorenzo Forzini, MBDA.
Gen. Tangorra concluded the ceremony by
thanking Marina Ruggieri, master’s director, and all the university lecturers.
Experts Discuss ‘Meteorology in the
Medium Term: Old Gaps and
In April, the chapter organized the workshop “Meteorology in the Medium Term:
Old Gaps and New Perspectives,” which
aimed to analyze national initiatives. Chapter President Lt. Gen. Antonio Tangorra,
ITAF, welcomed attendees, then Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defense Domenico
Rossi spoke about the dual role of meteorology. A number of varied scientific presentations followed. Among them were:
Frank Silvio Marzano, CETEMPS, speaking
about radar and satellite remote sensing
of atmospheric precipitation; Bernardo de
Bernardinis, ISPRA president and Copernicus representative, speaking about the
future of operational meteorology; Elisa
Rosciano, ASI, speaking about a new mapping function derived from atmospheric
profiles to evaluate water vapor content;
Cristiano Tartaglione, AM-CSA, speaking about the evolution of meteorological
support for manned and remotely piloted
aircraft systems; and Col. Vittorio Villas-munta, AMI-CSA, speaking about the main
competencies of a meteorologist.
